The short version
Aster Disk runs entirely on your Mac. We don't collect anything. There is no analytics, no telemetry, no crash reporting, no cloud sync, no user accounts, no email signup. Your scan results, your trophy progress, and your settings live on your computer and never leave it.
What Aster Disk reads
To do its job — show you what's eating your disk — Aster Disk reads the filesystem you tell it to scan. That means:
- Names, sizes, and modification dates of files and folders inside the scan target.
- Bundle identifiers and Info.plist metadata for installed
.appbundles. - For the optional Path Explainer feature, the names and structures of paths you explicitly right-click and ask about.
Aster Disk does not read the contents of any file. It only looks at metadata exposed by the filesystem.
What Aster Disk stores
Everything Aster Disk persists lives on your Mac, inside:
~/Library/Containers/com.nerique.aster.Aster/(App Store sandbox container) — compact summaries of past scans, used for the "what changed since last scan" diff. These contain only metadata (path + size + modification date) for items above the significance threshold; they do not contain file contents.- macOS
UserDefaultsfor the Aster Disk bundle — settings, trophy unlock state, snooze list, scheduled-scan preferences. - macOS Notification Center records when you've opted in to scan-overdue notifications.
Nothing in either of these locations is transmitted anywhere. Removing Aster Disk and emptying its container removes all of it.
Apple Intelligence integration
On Macs that support Apple Intelligence and have it enabled, Aster Disk's Path Explainer can fall back to the on-device language model for paths its curated knowledge base doesn't recognise. This call is on-device only — no network request, no logging, no third-party. You can disable it in Settings → Apple Intelligence.
In-app purchases
Aster Disk Pro is a one-time, lifetime in-app purchase processed by Apple via StoreKit. Apple handles the transaction; Aster Disk only sees the entitlement result ("Pro: yes/no"). We never see your Apple ID, payment method, or transaction history. See Apple's privacy notice for App Store services.
What changes in the future
If we ever change Aster Disk's data handling — for example, if a future version adds optional cloud sync — that change will require a new privacy-policy version, a clearly-marked release note, and explicit user opt-in. We will not flip a default that sends data anywhere off-device.
